Siddhivinayak Temple
About Siddhivinayak Temple
Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir is one of the most visited temples in Mumbai, dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The word 'Siddhivinayak' means the Ganesha who grants wishes and fulfils desires. The temple attracts devotees from all walks of life — from common citizens to Bollywood celebrities and political leaders — who come seeking blessings for new ventures. Tuesdays see the largest crowds, with devotees queuing for hours for darshan.
Historical Significance
The temple was originally built in 1801 by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil, a childless couple who funded the construction hoping for divine grace. The original structure was a small brick shrine with a 2.5 ft tall idol of Ganesha carved from a single black stone. The temple was significantly expanded in 1990–91 with a six-storied structure, marble interiors, and a gold-plated dome. The temple trust is one of the wealthiest in Mumbai.
Architecture
The current structure was redesigned in 1990 with six floors, a large prayer hall, and a gold-plated shikhara (dome). The ceiling of the sanctum features a gold-plated inner dome. The wooden doors to the sanctum feature the Ashtavinayak (eight forms of Ganesha) carvings. The temple is built on a raised platform with marble flooring and can accommodate thousands of devotees.
Spiritual Significance
The Siddhivinayak idol is unique because the trunk curves to the right, which is rare and considered especially auspicious (most Ganesha idols have a left-curving trunk). A right-trunk Ganesha is known as a 'Siddhi Vinayak' — one with extraordinary powers. It is a tradition in Mumbai to visit this temple before starting any new project, business, or journey. The temple also hosts the city's most important Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
