Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple
About Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple
The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya marks the site believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and hero of the epic Ramayana. The grand temple was consecrated on 22 January 2024 in a ceremony attended by millions across India. Built by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, the temple is a magnificent structure in the Nagara style of North Indian architecture. It has become one of the most visited religious sites in India, drawing lakhs of devotees daily.
Historical Significance
The site has been a centre of faith for centuries, believed to be where Lord Rama was born in Treta Yuga. A temple existed at this location for millennia before being replaced by a structure during the Mughal era. Following a landmark Supreme Court verdict in November 2019, the site was allocated for the construction of a Ram temple. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on 5 August 2020, and the Pran Pratishtha (consecration) ceremony took place on 22 January 2024.
Architecture
The temple is built in the Nagara style of Hindu temple architecture and spans three stories, rising to a height of 161 feet. It is constructed entirely from Bansi Paharpur sandstone (pink stone from Rajasthan) without the use of steel or iron — relying on interlocking stone blocks. The structure covers 2.7 acres and features 392 pillars and 44 doors, all adorned with carvings of deities and scenes from the Ramayana. The temple is designed to last 1,000 years.
Spiritual Significance
Ayodhya is one of the seven Moksha-dayini cities in Hinduism — cities where liberation from the cycle of birth and death can be attained. The Ram Mandir symbolises the restoration of a millennia-old place of worship and is regarded as a pivotal cultural moment for Hindus worldwide. The temple's consecration was celebrated as a national event with festivities across the country.
