Mahakaleshwar Temple
About Mahakaleshwar Temple
Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas and is situated in the ancient city of Ujjain on the banks of the river Shipra. The presiding deity, Lord Mahakaleshwar, is the lord of time and death, and is considered the guardian deity of Ujjain. The temple is unique because the Jyotirlinga is dakshinamukhi (south-facing), which is extremely rare and considered highly significant in tantric traditions. The temple is also one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas.
Historical Significance
The temple's history dates back to the pre-historic era and finds mention in several ancient texts including the Puranas and the works of Kalidasa. The original temple was destroyed by Iltutmish in 1235 CE. The present five-storied structure was rebuilt by the Maratha general Ranoji Shinde in 1734 CE. The underground sanctum housing the Jyotirlinga is the original ancient level that survived destruction. Major renovations were completed in recent years, creating a grand corridor around the temple.
Architecture
The temple is a five-storied structure with the Jyotirlinga on the lowest level, underground. The first floor houses the Omkareshwar Shiva lingam, and the second floor contains a Nagchandreshwar idol open for darshan only on Nag Panchami. The temple was built in the Bhumija, Chalukya, and Maratha architectural styles. The Mahakal Lok corridor features 108 intricately carved pillars depicting scenes from Shiva Purana.
Spiritual Significance
The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is believed to be 'swayambhu' (self-manifested) and derives its power from within itself (unlike other Jyotirlingas that are ritually established). The daily Bhasma Aarti — where the deity is anointed with fresh ash from funeral pyres — is one of the most intense and sought-after rituals in Hinduism. Ujjain was one of the four ancient kingdoms and is also the site of the Kumbh Mela (Simhastha) held every 12 years.
