Banke Bihari Temple
About Banke Bihari Temple
Banke Bihari Temple is one of the most sacred Krishna temples in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh. 'Banke' means bent and 'Bihari' means supreme enjoyer — the deity stands in his signature tribhanga (three-fold bending) posture playing the flute. The temple was established by Swami Haridas, a great devotee and music saint of the 16th century. The deity is believed to be self-manifested and is one of the most visited shrines in the Braj region.
Historical Significance
The temple was founded by Swami Haridas in 1864, though the deity was worshipped centuries earlier. Swami Haridas, the guru of Tansen (one of Akbar's Navaratnas), first discovered the divine image of Banke Bihari in Nidhivan. The original shrine was a small kutir; the current temple was built with community contributions over several decades. The temple follows unique traditions — the curtain (jhaki) before the deity is opened and closed every few minutes to protect devotees from being overwhelmed by the beauty of the Lord.
Architecture
The temple is built in Rajasthani style with red sandstone walls and ornate jharokhas (overhanging enclosed balconies). The sanctum is relatively small, creating an intimate darshan experience. The ceiling features intricate floral patterns and Krishna Leela paintings. The temple sits within the narrow lanes of old Vrindavan, adding to its traditional charm.
Spiritual Significance
Banke Bihari is considered a living embodiment of Krishna's playful (Leela) aspect. The unique curtain-opening darshan (jhaki) is found nowhere else — it is said the deity's gaze is so powerful that a continuous look could mesmerise the devotee. During Janmashtami and Holi, the temple becomes the spiritual epicentre of Vrindavan with celebrations that attract millions.
